Format of the ACT
The ACT is designed to assess high school students' general educational development
and predict their ability to complete college-level work.
ACT results are accepted by virtually all U.S. colleges and universities.
The ACT test covers four skill areas: English, Mathematics, Reading Comprehension,
and Science Reasoning. As of February 2005, the
ACT assessment now includes an optional
Writing section.
ACT English Section
The English section of the ACT consists of a total of 75 multiple-choice
questions. The English section includes 5 separate prose passages, each
accompanied by 15 questions. Test takers have 45 minutes to complete the
English section.
The purpose of the English section is to test your ability to apply the
standard rules of punctuation, grammar, sentence structure, and
rhetorical skills such as organization and style.
ACT Math Section
The Math section of the ACT consists of a total of 60 multiple-choice
questions. Test takers have 60 minutes to complete the Math section.
The purpose of the Math section is to test your ability to reason and solve
problems using your basic knowledge of
Pre-Algebra, Elementary and
Intermediate Algebra, and Coordinate and Plane Geometry.
ACT Reading Section
The Reading section of the ACT consists of a total of 40 multiple-choice
questions. The Reading section includes 4 separate passages on the topics of
social studies, natural sciences, fiction, and humanities, each accompanied by
10 questions. Test takers have 35 minutes to complete the Reading section.
The purpose of the Reading section is to test your ability to understand, make
connections, and draw conclusions from what you read. The ACT Reading section
does not require you to possess any external knowledge about the topic being discussed.
ACT Science Section
The
Science section of the ACT consists of a total of 40 multiple-choice
questions. The Science section includes 7 separate passages, each accompanied by
approximately 5-7 questions. The topic of each passage varies, but relates to
either earth sciences, biology, chemistry, or physics. Test takers have 35
minutes to complete the Science section.
The purpose of the Science section is to test your ability to understand,
analyze, and draw conclusions from the scientific data that is given. The data
may appear in tables and graphs, as an experiment summary,
or may be expressed in paragraph form.
